It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Jelenic, a dedicated Operations Analyst in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) Network of the World Bank’s Africa Region. Michael passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual rigor, compassion, and commitment to improving lives across the globe.
Michael held a master’s degree in international affairs from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where he specialized in political economy. His academic pursuits were matched by his professional dedication to addressing complex development challenges, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Through his work at the World Bank, Michael contributed meaningfully to the mission of reducing poverty and promoting sustainable economic growth in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions.
Colleagues remember Michael for his sharp analytical mind, tireless work ethic, and deep sense of purpose. He brought not only technical expertise to his role but also an unshakable belief in the power of equitable development to transform lives.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael was a kind and thoughtful individual — a cherished friend, respected colleague, and valued member of his community. His presence, insight, and humanity will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Memorial service details will be announced by the family at a later date.
